November 18 2011

To All Community Representatives, Athletic Directors, Coaches, Assistant Coaches and Clergy:

We would like to thank all the communities that have submitted rosters, paperwork, entry fees, insurance, gym dates and black-out dates to the League.  This has been of great assistance to us as we prepare for the beginning of our 2011-2012 MGOBL season.  For those communities and teams that have still not submitted rosters, paperwork, entry fees or insurance, you have until Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011 12:00pm to do so.  (contact the League Director, Chris Pantazis, for instructions).

The season will begin the weekend of December 3rd-4th.  The format for this year will be as follows:

  • Junior Girls – eight (8) teams in the division will go around once for a total of seven (7) games; all teams automatically qualify for play-offs.

  • Senior Girls – eight (8) teams in the division will go around once for a total of seven (7) games; all teams automatically qualify for play-offs.

  • Senior Boys – nine (9) teams in the division will go around once for a total of eight (8) games; all teams automatically qualify for play-offs; 8th & 9th seed will play for the 8th play-off slot.

  • Junior Boys – fifteen (15) teams in the division; they will be divided into two (2) divisions (American & National); they will play once around within their division for a total of seven (7) or six (6) games, respectively; if time and gym sites permit, we will add ‘cross-over’ games to get to 8 games;  Standings within each division will be determined AFTER the 1st go around; ‘Cross over’ games WILL NOT affect the team’s standings within their division. All teams automatically qualify for play-offs.

We thank you all for your participation in this beautiful ministry of our Archdiocese and look forward to another successful and rewarding season.

Dear Faithful of the MGOBL,

First, I would like to congratulate all of our athletes and coaches for an amazing season! The 2010 to 2011 MGOBL season was truly full of love, laughter, friendly athletic competition and wonderful sportsmanship. Special congratulations go out to Astoria Jr. Girls, Astoria Jr. Boys, Astoria Sr. Girls and Flushing Sr. Boys for winning the Championship games in their respective divisions!

My hope and prayer is that the spirit of Christian Agape that we have worked hard to cultivate this season continues to transform both our League and ourselves. I am pleased that we were able to work together to create an atmosphere centered both around our Orthodox beliefs as well as the athletic accomplishments of our GOYAns. If we continue to push forward with these goals in mind, we will be able to grow and build upon this year's progress.

I would like to thank the members of our Steering Committee for their hard work. Most especially, I would like to thank Chris Pantazis, our Director, who has put in countless hours of sweat and tears to ensure a smooth and successful basketball season. Well done, Chris.

Lastly, I want to say what a pleasure it has been to witness the games with all of you while getting to know our coaches and parents and cheering on our young Athletes. I look forward to the future and the continued growth of the MGOBL!

Have a most blessed Holy Lent and a wonderful PASCHA!

In Christ,

My Dear Faithful of the MGOBL,

What a wonderful weekend of athletic events we just had! The semi-finals proved to be games that were well attended and well played. Our coaches and players performed with dignity and respect, remembering that they are not only representatives of their parishes, but members of the Body of Christ. Our spectators cheered on their teams, uplifting them to perform their best and to play the best games they could. Congratulations to all of our teams.

That being said, I want to remind all of our faithful of our responsibility this coming weekend to continue to faithfully and respectfully attend our games and cheer on our teams. In line with our identity as an Orthodox Christian league, I must remind all players and coaches that they are to conduct themselves on and off the court with dignity and respect. Poor sportsmanship, by our players, coaches and spectators will not be tolerated, and those disrespecting that guideline will be asked to leave the premises.

Also, our players and coaches most specifically are reminded that they are to play in a Christ like manner, remembering that they are using the abilities given to them by our Lord for His glorification. Any player or coach that curses either on or off the court will immediately be removed from the game for the remainder of the quarter. If this happens a second time, that person will be taken out of the rest of the game.

I am confident that this will not be an issue this coming weekend, as we remember that we are faithful Orthodox Christians in a time of repentance and increased prayer during this, our Great and Holy Lent. I look forward to seeing all of you this weekend to cheer on our young athletes and to praise our good and loving God.

With faith and love in Christ,

Rev. Deacon Evagoras Constantinides

Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries for the Direct Archdiocesan District Chairman of the MGOBL

Dear Faithful of the MGOBL,

As you know, there are no scheduled games league-wide for December 4th. This is in honor of the fact that all GOYANS in the League are kindly asked to participate in their local GOYA Christmas Retreats. These retreats are a wonderful opportunity for our youth to come together and learn more about our Orthodox Christian faith. While our schedules are full, our young athletes make time for their games, and as such, we expect them to make time for this important part of this MGOBL Athletic Ministry. Remember, this is not just a basketball league, but an invitation to learn how to compete and live in our modern world as an Orthodox Christian.  We can only do this if we take time out of our everyday schedule to reflect and grow in the faith. We are looking forward to seeing all of our young athletes at these retreats.

If you live on Long Island, your local retreat will be held at St. Paul's in Hempstead.  InterGOYA Retreat
If you live in one of the five boroughs, your local retreat will be held at St. Catherine's in Astoria. 5-Borough GOYA Retreat.  Please see the flyers that we have uploaded for more information.

As we begin this "most wonderful time of the year", we pray that you take the time to focus on the true meaning and cause of the season, that being the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas Season,

In Christ,

Rev. Deacon Evagoras Constantinides

ATTENTION COACHES, ASSISTANTS, ATHLETIC DIRECTORS PARENTS & PLAYERS

PLEASE RE-CHECK YOUR TEAM SCHEDULES, THERE HAVE BEEN SOME REVISIONS MADE.  THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR UNDERSTANDING AND COOPERATION AND HAVE A GREAT SEASON.  ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE EMAIL ME, CHRIS PANTAZIS, AT fetaboyz@aol.com

Posted 11/1/2010

The schedule for the 2010-2011 season is now posted up to the end of December - Schedules are posted in the tab labeled "Current Season".

The Junior Boys division will have a total of thirteen (13) games before playoff start.  The top 12 teams will qualify for the playoffs

The Senior Girls & Junior Girls division will have a total of ten (10) games before playoffs start.  After completion of seven (7) games, the division will be ‘split’ into an upper and lower bracket.  You will then play another three (3) games within your bracket.  You can only move within your bracket.  All team will qualify for the playoffs.

The Senior Boys division will have a total of either eleven (11) or ten (10) games before playoffs start. After completion of eight (8) games, the division will be ‘split’ into an upper (5 teams) and lower (4 teams) bracket.  You will then play another round of games within your bracket.  You can only move within your bracket.  All teams will qualify for the playoffs.

Please check the schedule CAREFULLY.  Although it has been reviewed and verified several times, we are still human, and capable of errors.  Should you find any (i.e. your team is scheduled to play at two different sites against two different teams on the same day), please contact the Director of the League IMMEDIATELY.

The schedule for the month of January will be posted by mid-week.  Best of luck to all our teams!

Posted 10/28/2010

We would like to thank all of the participating communities for their cooperation and dedication in these, the first days of the 2010-2011 MGOBL Season. Of the 39 participating teams, 38 had turned in rosters as of last nights’ deadline. We have had a great response and we truly appreciate that. As we processed the rosters last night, there is still some paperwork missing for some individuals. Please turn in that paperwork as soon as possible, as no player will be allowed to play until their entire file is completed, turned in and approved by the Steering Committee.

As for the issue of player eligibility, there is still some confusion as to what the defined rules are. We have included in this memo a simplified reading of the eligibility for the MGOBL. Please note that this list is not meant to be exhaustive, and can be amended by the Steering Committee or by myself in cases of special exemption. Eligibility Memo

If you have any questions regarding eligibility or any other MGOBL related issue, please contact our League Director, Chris Pantazis at 516-640-7283.

I am looking forward to a great season and your continued cooperation and dedication to this ministry of our Direct Archdiocesan District!

In Christ,

Rev. Deacon Evagoras Constantinides

Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries

POSTED:  October 5, 2010

Faithful Coaches, Parents and Players of the MGOBL,

I hope and pray that you are settling into the autumn season.  As we prepare for the beginning of the 2010-2011 MGOBL Season, there are a few things that I would like to remind everyone of.

1. October 23rd and 27th are the dates for paperwork drop-off. Please be aware: No player will play this year in the MGOBL until all of their paperwork is turned in and complete. This is non-negotiable.

2. This season, we will have a strict no cursing policy. It will absolutely be zero tolerance. Please remember that this is a Orthodox Christian league, and the way you play and your manners as you attend the games should reflect that. This applies to everyone, players coaches and parents in the stands.

3. This website will be the place to refer for all things MGOBL this season. Please use it, and if you have suggestions as to how to make it better, please let Chris Pantazis know.

Lastly, I hope that everyone has a wonderful season. I know that there are teams that are practicing and getting ready, and as we do this, let us never forget that this league is not just a regular sports league, this is a ministry of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocesan District, and as such, a part of the Church. How we conduct ourselves while at these games should reflect our faith and love for Jesus Christ, and we should always strive to glorify Him in our actions.

Before I sign off, I would like to thank Chris Pantazis and the entire Steering Committee for the hard work that they have already done and that they will continue to do for the duration of this coming season.

If there is anything that I can do to help you in this important ministry, or if you would like to speak more about the MGOBL, please do not hesitate to contact me.

In Christ,

Rev. Deacon Evagoras Constantinides

Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries for the Direct Archdiocesan District

New Commissioner Letter from
Rev. Deacon Evagoras Constantinides, Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries
for the Direct Archdiocesan District
(Posted Sep 05, 2010)

Faithful in the Lord,

I am happy to announce the appointment of Chris Pantazis as the new Director of the Metropolitan Greek Orthodox Basketball League. Chris has served for many years in the league both as a coach and a member of the Archdiocesan Steering Committee of the MGOBL and will be a vital part of the continued growth and success of the League.

I would also like to thank Larry Hatzioannides for his many years of service to the MGOBL. Over the better part of the past decade, Larry’s steady hand has guided the League to continued success and growth. I thank him again and look forward to his continued involvement in the League.

With this significant change, and with some more to come, the future of the MGOBL is most certainly secure. More now than ever before, people from throughout the New York area will be committing their time and talents to make this Basketball League the best it can be.

While we must always aim for fairness in competition and good sportsmanship, we must never forget that this too is a Christ-centered Ministry of the Church. We play, we coach, we ref, all to the Glory of God! Everything we do must be to the Glory of Jesus Christ!

Let us never forget this mantra as we begin our new ecclesiastical year, our new school year, and as we approach the coming season of basketball in the MGOBL. I am excited for the upcoming season and look forward to meeting each and every one of you.

In Christ,

Rev. Deacon Evagoras Constantinides
Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries
for the Direct Archdiocesan District
